Ostermalm Station by Missangest Ostermalm Station by Missangest
Extra artwork today! It's supposed to be "Östermalm Station" but DeviantART doesn't allow "Ö". Anyway! That's a small detail. I just really wanted to pay my respects for the people gathering at Östermalm Station today. It warms me up to see so many people recognizing and standing up against racism.

UPDATE: Figured I'd share the video of the actual moment as well, I think everyone should be able to see it: www.facebook.com/video.php?v=1…
That happened after approximately 2000 people had met up for the demonstration at another area.

To give a brief explanation of the entire thing. I will not mention the name of the party because I have no desire of giving them more advertising. I've mentioned before that we have a racist political party in the parliament. A few days ago they put up "advertising" in the subway station at Östermalm (where a lot of tourists travel) where they apologized for the begging people in Sweden. Calling living, breathing people "the mess". They think that we should solve the problem with people begging by making begging illegal (which to me feels like going into a hospital, throwing sheets over the sick people and go HEY, WE SOLVED THE ISSUE WITH SICK PEOPLE). They are using the same propaganda as the nazis did in Germany prior to WW2. When I first saw it (which I did online because I no longer live in Stockholm myself, for that same reason I couldn't join in on the demonstration today) I just got nauseous and felt very uncomfortable, a little bit scared to be honest. It was very disturbing to see. No other political parties pulls stunts like these in Sweden, we're not used getting political stuff shoved in our faces like this and especially not propaganda with the purpose of kicking on people who are already lying down in order to gain more power themselves.

What's even more disturbing is seeing people defending that type of propaganda. That this intolerance continues to spread in Sweden. SL, the ones in charge of the subways, trains and buses in Stockholm defended this. Saying that this type of "advertising" goes under the freedom of speech, but what about the law against hate speech? This was directed towards the european immigrants as a people, not the swedish begging people. This "advertising" has been reported over 40 times and they will now investigate if this in fact has gone against the law against hate speech.

They had a demonstration today about this whole ordeal. People who stood up for human rights. They then proceeded towards this station and tore down the propaganda despite 20-30 of the police being there. Several were caught by the police, arrested for vandalism. But they did this anyway. That gives me hope.

With people like this, Sweden will NOT be run by intolerance. Sweden will continue to be a place where we continue to fight so that everybody can feel safe, not go backwards as a society. I refuse to believe that this country will ever go the same sick and morbid way which intolerance has gone several times in the past. We know the result of racism today. We know the result of nazism today. Still people think that we should take that same road again and expect a different outcome.

I generally try to stay out of politics as far as my art goes. Especially when it comes to this political party. The "soldiers" of this party tend to react to any criticism with death threats, rape threats and other harassments. Causing me to pull back a bit, I have enough shit to deal with in my life besides them. But I had to do this, this was important to me. Also, when it comes to human rights, I think that it's above "just" politics and it's difficult for me to sit here quietly pretending like I think that what this political party is doing is right. I couldn't be there with the demonstrators today, but I what I can do is spreading awareness of this and show respect towards the ones who stood up for human rights today. And if people find me offensive or get upset by me showing parts of my political standpoint, then that's fine with me. You can unfollow me.

I'm sorry if this didn't make much sense. I've been seeing people write about this non-stop for the past couple of days and I've written about it myself, but now I'm just emotional and frankly a bit tired as well. I would link to articles about this but I only have articles in swedish... But I guess to summarize it: Sweden which has been known for being warm and welcoming for people, regardless of which country they come from, has taken serious and disturbing steps towards intolerance the last couple of years. Many of us are worried and scared. But we do have people standing up against this and I really really hope that love will win in the end.

As far as this artwork goes, I really just have to say that I wanted to use the red to show the warmth of the people opposed to the cold blue of the racist propaganda.

I want to end this with an apology as well. Just like that political party. I want to apologize to any tourists who had to witness this disgrace in the subway station while trying to see the best of what Stockholm had to offer. We have a huge problem with racists and believe us when we say, we are really trying to deal with it and we will not accept anything less than equal rights for everybody.

when i was a little kid around 8 or 9, i remember walking alongside an indian boy back from school. the boy is not very smart but he's cheerful in nature. he always makes me walk at the side  while he's closer to middle of the road. he told his reason that sums up to me why racism is an obsolete notion

"you're smarter than me at school, it's better that i got hit by a car than you".

our skin colour differ so much but he saw a quality in me beyond that, that he is willing to risk himself for my sake.

till this very day i taught myself to not look at a person skin colour, educational background or whatever sets me apart from him or her but to see their heart

PS: sorry for the broken english

Why must people be like that? Hate gets you nowhere, it just results in a vicious circle where everyone gets hurt

Ever heard of a movie called American History X? Its a movie about a neo-Nazi in America who is racist against black people and his younger brother follows in his footsteps. But the neo-Nazi gets sent to prison, where he realizes the errors of his ways and when he gets out, he tries to turn his life around and that of his younger brother. One line from the movie that I think fits is "Hate is baggage. Life is too short to be pissed off all the time. It's just not worth it"

Power to Sweden's people for fighting against what is not right.
You'll never quite understand the beauty behind humanity until you see people defending not just their selves, but those around them.

I've always loved your artwork's sense of what's right. Considering how you said the political party threatens people, it's kind of brave of you to post this.

Really though, more people should try to stand up for others. It doesn't happen enough. No, I disagree!

Thank you!

And that's very true. It feels like society is starting to move backwards, most people aren't even hiding behind usernames or sitting behind closed doors when expressing their racism anymore. It's getting normalized and that's just terrifying... :/

It seems like the hate is spreading everywhere. WHY does the world want to be ran by HATE when it's proven ineffective (and outright destructive) instead of LOVE? I know I sound like a hippie but seriously??? WHY????

*sigh*

As for the artwork, you did an excellent job. I hope things get better over there. If things get worse, RUN TO THE MOUNTAINS!

I wonder the same thing. It's extremely worrying to see where things are going now and how people just doesn't get it that hate does not solve anything. :/

And thank you! :'D

I hate the political environment we have in Sweden now, fuckin racists that's on their way to be the biggest party in the parliament is a really scary thing =( On the other hand, the love and courage these people who tore the "advertisements" down are showing is fantastic and I acctually get teared up :) they are true heroes who fight for equality and respect! I really can't understand how so much hate can live in peoples hearts that makes them place their votes on this specific party...

A wonderful piece of art you've come up with here ^^ <3 for everyone!

It really is messed up. But these people standing up for what's right certainly gives hope, I'm sure that as long as we have people like these around we won't lose Sweden to racists! :')

Thank you! :')

I find it really wrong that the people who tore down the posters were considered 'vandals' and were arrested, while the people who put them up in the first place had nothing done to them. For God's sake, these people were complaining about people who are only doing what they have to do to get by (may I add, they have no other choice) and they were being supported by the police?!

Yeah, the priorities of this society has gotten really messed up. It makes me think about the fact that a bit less than a year ago when I was going home and passed through the inner parts of my town, I saw people holding speeches with megaphones. When I got closer I realised that it was in fact one of the nazi parties. This party which was known for actually being a nazi party (but thank god does not exist today, the party dissolved a few months ago), they screamed their nazi propaganda... and this was approved by the police. In fact they were protected by the police so nobody would hurt the nazis. I couldn't believe my eyes.

It really needs to change and it gives me hope that there's people like the ones yesterday who are fighting for what's right.

I'm glad to hear that people are going against this. I mean...there's no way to say this is just exercising their freedom of speech. This just hate speech against people for being a certain way.

Exactly! I hope that the people who are investigating the matter due to all of the reports of it will come to a decision that this in fact is hate speech and that consequences will be done.

Wow. As sad as it is that those posters got put up in the first place, the fact that so many people took a stand against them is inspiring.
